National Indo-American Museum Launches New oral history initiative

The event, held at NIAM’s Umang and Paragi Patel Center at 815 S. Main St. in Lombard, was attended by the Consul General, Mr. Somnath Ghosh, other invited speakers, and members of the community including those whose stories are already featured on NIAM’s website https://oralhistory.niam.org/ Funded by the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelly foundation, the Broadening Narratives project seeks to go beyond the portrayal of Indian Americans as a highly educated and successful immigrant group. It will diversify NIAM’s Oral History collection by adding the voices of Indian Americans from a broad range of socio-economic levels, including marginalized and under-represented groups, such as LGBTQ+, retail clerks, gas station attendants, people living in shelters or on government assistance, and the undocumented. The Consul General spoke of the importance of a community capturing its own story in authentic, first person voices instead of leaving it solely in the hands of others to interpret the Indian American experience. Pakistani Americans Call for An Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza

The forum had organized a symposium entitled “Peace and Conflict in a Multipolar World” in downtown Chicago that was widely attended by Pakistani Americans. The speakers included Congressman Jamaal Bowman, Dr Ayesha Siddiqa, Dr Ammar Ali Jan. The event was moderated by Raza Rumi. Congressman Bowman, who is running for office again, highlighted his unwavering support for the Palestinian people and how he had resisted the pressure not to call for a ceasefire and ask for ending Israeli atrocities against the people of Gaza.  “I am against the death of children everywhere in the world. The Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) Chicago, a 501(c)(3) organization, hosted a spectacular, vibrant, and colorful Holi celebration marked by a beautifully decorated stage and premises filled with music, dance, Thandai (a special India drink), delicious food, and singing that depicted glorious Indian culture at the Mall of India, Naperville, Illinois, on Sunday, April 21, 2024. The grand event kicked off with an ensemble by Maharashtra Mandal called ‘Dhol Tasha’. This rhythm got the entire crowd, including the mall visitors, to join in the fun and dance together. The mayor of Naperville, Scott Wehrli, joined in the traditional dance and learned a few steps. Three outstanding poets invited from India to perform were Arun Gemini, Shambhu Sikhar and Mumtaz Naseem. These poets kept the audience spellbound with hashya poetry, comedy, gazals, and geets for about three hours. Mr. Shikhar and Mr. Gemini both recited outstanding poetry with satire and comedy. The camp was attended by more than 500 people of Indian descent families. The camp had focused mainly on two issues faced by the Indian diaspora – OCI Card and Passport issues. Consul General Hon. Successful Health Fair, Coat and Blanket Drive organized by Federation of Indian Associations, Chicago

This event was attended by more than hundreds of folks from Chicago land. The event was supposed to end at twelve noon, yet people continued to walk-in. Excellent arrangements were made for the guests by providing them early morning breakfast, tea, and coffee as many of the people came for the testing and the blood work, fasting. This event was based on the core values of FIA of servicing the community in which we all live. There were more than 40 volunteers from the FIA team to ensure everything went with precision. Doctors from different specialty provided their services free on a Sunday morning, and they all said ‘time well spent’. The registration desk was taken care of by special multi-lingual volunteers who ensured all the details were captured, including the HIPAA release forms.
