A Spell-binding performance delights audience at Rangla Punjab 2012

Chicago IL: More than 1500 community members, 28 programs, over 175 participants, program coordinators and volunteers of all ages from Metropolitan Chicago Area and surrounding States packed Copernicus Theater (Formerly known as Gateway Theater) Auditorium, 5216 West Lawrence Ave., Chicago, IL to celebrate “Rangla Punjab 2012” Vaisakhi festival at 7 PM, Saturday April 7, 2012. Deafening music beats and rocking performances built the mood at the most awaited evening in Chicago. An amalgamation of myriad colors of youthful spirit and breathtaking performance by participants marked ‘Rangla Punjab 2012’, the welcome celebration for Vaisakhi (Spring) festival. Other highlights of the evening were stalls showcasing Indian chic designer collection and accessories.

The variety show titled “Rangla Punjab” is the flagship event of Punjabi Cultural Society of Chicago (PCS). Rangla Punjab program has been in existence in Chicago since the early eighties. Its purpose is to impart Punjabi Indian culture into the next generation born and brought up here in America. It is also to unite the community living here through a common culture and celebrate it together. It is designed to teach and promote Punjabi performing arts such as Bhangra, Gidha, songs, drama and music to the next generation of the local Punjabi American community and provide an opportunity to showcase their talents.

Punjabi Cultural Society of Chicago is an all volunteer not-for-profit community service organization devoted to promoting Punjabi culture, language, performing arts, education, sports, good citizenship, and healthy life style in Metropolitan Chicago area.

“Rangla Punjab 2012 was a huge success in providing a platform to the families in the entire Midwest to connect with their roots in Punjab. Vaisakhi festival is the celebration of harvest season and the beginning of a new year in Punjab. On this day in 1699, Guru Gobind Singh (the tenth Sikh Guru) established the Khalsa and eliminated the differences of high and low and established that all human beings are equal in Anand Pur, Punjab, India.

The program was divided into four parts (4 People for Master of ceremony and 1 Stage Manager)
Emcee part 1: Mrs. Mona Shalla (Singing from 15 years in Rangla Punjab, performing Bhangra & Giddha, Enjoys singing and dancing for fun and promoting India and Indian culture)
Emcee Part 2: Harpreet Singh Grewal
Emcee Part 3: Thakar Singh Basati
Emcee Part 4: Gurrnukh Singh Bhullar
Stage Manager: Rajinder Singh Mago

Spoke at the show: Rajinder Singh Mago, Mohina Ahluwalia, Dr. Amarjit Singh, Balwinder Singh Girn, Thakar Singh Basati, Dr. Bhupinder Singh Saini. The current president of Sikh Religious Society in Palatine Harkirat Singh Sandhu spoke and said that you should be true to your own faith whatever you believe in.

The cultural evening kick-started with a Sikh prayer by young children, “O, God give us the gift that we never turn away from doing the good deeds.”(De Shiva Bar mohe ihe, shubh karman te kabhu na taron) shabad by Sikhs Youth of Chicago, Coordinated by Sukhdev Kaur Ghuman and was followed by an array of cultural items. A magnificently decked-up stage and appropriate background music provided the perfect setting.

Bhangra teams from University of Chicago, University of Iowa, and Illinois Institute of Technology performed, along with Bhangra and Gidha teams from Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin. The young children who performers were trained by P.C.S. volunteers for the last three months.

The program started at 7 pm and ended at midnight. The five hour long program consisted of 28 acts including Bhangra, Gidha, Punjabi songs and music, a short play and recognition of guests, sponsors and the P.C.S. officials.

There were a variety of programs throughout the function well applauded by the audience.
