Raja Krishnamoorthi is seeking the Democratic nomination for US House of Representatives in Illinois’ 8th Congressional district. If elected, Raja would be one of the first Indian-Americans ever to serve in the House of Representatives. Raja is an excellent candidate for this suburban Chicago district: he has a solid educational background, with degrees from Princeton and Harvard, and is the president of a high-tech company. Previously, he was Deputy Treasurer of Illinois for two years, after serving as a Special Assistant Attorney General. Prior to launching his own campaign for Illinois Comptroller in the 2010 cycle, Raja worked on Barack Obama’s campaigns for House, Senate, and President. Raja is also a good fit for the district, which gave Obama 62% of the vote in 2008, and is 12% Asian American (the second-highest concentration in Illinois) and has about 40,000 -American Muslim residents.
Raja has released position statements publicly on a range of issues from job creation to healthcare to women’s rights. Although the “establishment” wing of the Democratic Party in Illinois has been silent, the grassroots Democratic party is solidly behind Raja. Raja has the endorsements of many of the local precinct leaders, unions, individual community organizations and community groups.
The Muslim community needs another strong voice in Congress. I believe Raja will be a voice for our community (alongside Keith Ellison, Andre Carson and other like-minded Dems). But for Raja to succeed the Muslim community must do all it can in terms of raising money and turning out the vote in this primary election (3/20). Once the primary is over and once Raja wins a place on the November ballot against Joe Walsh of the Tea Party wing of Republican Party the DNC will support Raja’s campaign.
In the Democratic comptroller primary Raja came within 1% of beating David Miller statewide, and received over twice as many votes as Miller in the areas which make up the new 8th Congressional District. And all this when he only had 6% name recognition at the beginning of the race! In the present race, Raja raised over $412,000 in the first five-and-a-half weeks of his campaign – more than any other Democrat seeking an open seat. He has also been endorsed by the Asian American Action Fund of Greater Chicago, the Indo-American Democratic Organization, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, Congressman Danny K. Davis, and numerous other local officials.
