8th District Voting Profile (Good News):
- There are 22,541 registered (they can vote) South Asians in the 8th District. 1,492 of these likely voters are South Asian, or 4.2% of the primary voting universe
- There are 3 simple ways to activate South Asian voters and get them to vote in the primary:
Vote-By-Mail, Early Voting and Get Out The Vote Efforts
- Vote-By-Mail: Voting from the comfort of your own home, vote-by-mail is the easiest option when it comes to voting. There are three easy steps. Download, fill out, and mail in the application before March 11th Receive ballot from the county in the mail, vote for any offices on the ballot, seal envelope, sign the seal, and mail ballot in before March 18th
- Early Voting: Early voting has begun and runs until March 15th. Each county has different polling places open at different times each day, you must vote at any early polling place in the county in which you reside. This is exactly like voting on Election Day, but you can choose your time to go vote.
- Get Out The Vote Efforts: The primary elections this year are on Tuesday, March 20th
Things to remember: Check where your polling place is located, Give yourself enough time to vote and Contact Raja’s campaign if you need help (224) 698-1405
Raja Krishnamoorthi is close to approaching victory for the Democratic nomination for US House of Representatives in Illinois’ 8th Congressional district. When elected Raja would be one of the first Indian- Americans ever to serve in the House of Representatives. Raja is an excellent candidate for this suburban Chicago district: He has a solid educational background, with degrees from Princeton and Harvard with Honors and he is the president of a high-tech company. Previously, he was Deputy Treasurer of Illinois for two years, after serving as a Special Assistant Attorney General. Prior to launching his own campaign for Illinois Comptroller in the 2010 cycle, Raja worked on Barack Obama’s campaigns for House, Senate, and President. Raja is also a good fit for the district, which gave Obama 62% of the vote in 2008, and is 12% Asian American (the second-highest concentration in Illinois) and has about 40,000 Indian-American residents.
In the present race, Raja raised over $412,000 in the first five-and-a-half weeks of his campaign – more than any other Democrat seeking an open seat. He has also been endorsed by the Asian American Action Fund of Greater Chicago, the Indo-American Democratic Organization, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, Congressman Danny K. Davis, and numerous other local officials, Let us all as a Community take responsibility and make an effort to ensure our South Asian Community votes and we all can cross the finish line with great victory on March 20 2012, While they urged strong financial support for Raja (which can be done at www.rajaforcongress.com), they most importantly urged everyone in the community to pick up a Democratic Primary ballot and vote for Raja in the March 20th election. There are currently no South Asian members in the U.S. Congress, and the new 8th Congressional District has one of the highest concentrations of Indians than in any district in the U.S. Therefore, it will only be fitting that this district break the barrier and elect a South Asian Congressman.
In addition, community members pointed out that when Raja ran last time for State Comptroller, he lost by only 1% in 2010. That is because too few South Asians voted. As a leading community advocate Vandana Jhingan noted, “This election is up to our community to win, but we can only win if we vote!”
To learn more about how to vote, and where to vote, the community should visit Raja’s website, www.rajaforcongress.com. People can still vote by mail, and they can cast early vote as well before March 20th.
Rinki Talati A renowned singer from India who is now settled in the U.S. had a blast in the Raja Krishnamoorthi’s Fund-Raising event. She performed “Sajanaji Vari Vari, Aja Nach le and Ya mera dil “. “We really had a great response from the audience and they showered many compliments. As an artist this was an honor and a great opportunity for me. It was really a memorable performance” she said.
