Commendable service rendered by Shree Jalaram Mandir volunteers at 3rd annual health fair

Chicago IL: An annual health fair was organized at Shree Jalaram Mandir located at located at 425, Illinois Blvd , Hoffman Estates , IL , on Sunday, April, 15, 2012. More than 325 patients availed the free services provided at this health fairs. The health fair is a community service program mainly for the benefit of devotees and all those without medical insurance, visitors and others in need of medical checkups.

Shree Jalaram Mandir volunteers have been working hard to help the society through several beneficial programs in addition to the religious activities and events. The social and humanitarian activities include blood donation drive, bone marrow drive, yoga classes, dance classes, music and instrument classes, youth activities and educational classes. One significant program organized by the temple is the annual health fair. This event marked the 3rd year of the health fair.

Long lines of participants arrived early in the morning to take advantage of the medical services at this event. The main coordinator of this event was Mr. Bakulbhai Thakkar. This healthfair started at 8.00 AM and concluded at 1.00 PM. Mr. Chirayu Parikh, President of Shree Jalaram Mandir was overjoyed to see such a large turnout. He stated the following after the mega event concluded.”Individuals, mainly senior citizens from Indian-American community took part in this health fair. People came from all over Chicago Metropolitan area. We are fortunate to have more than 100 enthusiastic health care volunteers of Jalaram Mandir participate in this community service event”.

According to him, the primary goal was to provide comprehensive medical checkup and needed consultations with various specialists all under one roof. Most attendees who took advantage of this event were those who could not afford medical insurance coverage, or had no access to medical services due to transportation or language barrier, due to economic constraints or residency requirements.

The process started with registration of patients and filling out a questionnaire before they were directed to go for health screening.

Volunteers managed the flow of patients from one station to another in a smooth fashion without much chaos or confusion. Patients received height, weight, blood pressure, blood sugar, urine analysis, EKG and bone density testing. Specialty consultants of Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dentistry, Podiatry and Optometry rendered free services at this event.

Attendees were served hot Masala Chai, breakfast and snack after blood work was completed. At the conclusion of the event, hot lunch was provided to all the hard working volunteers.

Credit goes to Chirayu Parikh, President of Shree Jalaram Mandir and his team for organizing such an excellent community service event. The whole team worked tirelessly throughout the fair without any complaints. They managed to coordinate all the activities of medical checkup in a systematic way, by providing individual cabins for consulting Physicians. Lastly they must be applauded for awarding individual certificates to all those who volunteered their services at this event. It is a recognition that is truly deserved.

Regular activities at the temple include Bhajans on every Thursday, first and third Sunday, Sunderkand path every Saturday, Abhishek on Mondays and on Ekadashi, group Satyanarayan Katha, Jalaram Jayanti, lectures of saints from India and celebrations of all religious events like Ram Navami, Janmashtmi, Navratri, Holi, Diwali and others. Ekadashi. On the humanitarian side the temple arranges annual health camp, provides free flu shots, arranges blood donation. Soon, there are plans to provide monthly clinic Seva, which will include doctor’s consultation, laboratory tests and providing free generic medicines on an ongoing basis. Educationally, the activities include yoga classes, music teaching, Gujarati classes and religious classes.
