Sher-e-Punjab Sports and Cultural Club Chicago holds successful International Kabaddi Cup and Volleyball Tournament
Chicago IL: On Sunday, September 02, 2012, the Sher-e-Punjab Sports and Cultural Club held its Annual International Kabaddi Cup and Volleyball Tournament at Busse Woods Forest Preserve, Elk Grove Village, IL. This sport event turned out to be a big festival of fun, food, live entertainment and sports. Despite uncertain weather in the morning people not only from Chicagoland’s area but from Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin came in large numbers to enjoy this sports plus festival. In the evening a famous Punjabi folk singer Baljit Malwa from New York entertained the audience with his popular songs for more than one and a half hour.
Chief guest was S. Ajit (Jay) Singh Walia of Wisconsin and Guest of Honor was S. Jasbir Singh Depty from Indianapolis IN.
In the open highly physical and competitive Kabaddi Cup matches the first prize was won by the host Shere Punjab Sports & Cultural club, Chicago team by defeating Kings Sports Club Sacramento (California) team with 33 ½ points against 30. The first prize of was sponsored by S. Jaswinder Gill brother and S. Nazar Singh Gill of Waukegan, Illinois. The second prize did go to runner-up team of Kings Sports Club, Sacramento. The second prize was sponsored by S. Gurdev Gill of Waukegan and S. Amritpal Gill of Appleton WI. Four teams competed in the open Kabaddi. The other two teams were Miri-Piri Sports Club Indianapolis and Harjit Sports Club Toronto, Canada. The competition was hard-hitting. There was a lot of excitement in the Kabaddi lovers whenever a raider or stopper scored a point. They appreciated the players by announcing cash prizes for every point scored.
Kabaddi players of International repute were playing in both the teams. Stoppers like Dante and his brother Larry of African American origin were big attraction. Two Hispanic player also played well for Kings Sports Club, Sacramento. For under-21 matches teams from Michigan, Chicago, Cleveland (OH) and Indiana did compete. The winner was Punjab Sports Club Cleveland who defeated the local Chicago team. Under 21 both prize was sponsor br S. Tirath Singh Atwal (Mitra Dhaba Indianapolis IN).
In volleyball tournament Chicago Light out team defeated Shaheed Bhagat Singh Sports Club by 3-1 set. Volley ball first Prize wasSponsor by S. Harmail SinghThiara, Second prize was sponsor by S. Baldev SinghBagri Chicago. Some Caucasian American players were also player for Chicago Volleyball Club. Tony Sanghera showed good skills for Shaheed Bhagat Singh Team. The sports festival started with prayers by S. Bhai Mohinder Singh, Head Granthi of Gurdwara Wheaton. A prayer and moment of silence was observed in the memory of those killed recently in shooting inside Oak Creek Gurdwara, WI. Opening Prayer was attended by Chairman S. Baldev Singh Salan, S. Jasbir Singh Depty from Indianapolis IN, S.Harmail Sing Thira from Kansas; S.Pinder Grewals and club members.
There was lot of free food for the spectators who enjoyed Jalebi and Pakoras along with tea from Manak Royal sweet. In lunch chicken, Chhole and rice were served by K K Pamma. The food was free and there was no entry of parking ticket. Women also came to see the festival in large numbers. After the Kabaddi and Volleyball matches Punjabi folk singer S. Baljit Malwa entertained the audience. A guest artist S. Tara Multani also presented a few songs and impressed the audience.
Chairman S. Baldev Singh Salan thanked all sponsors making this event very successful with the Generous donation. The sponsors were recognized and presented with plaques.

Hardeep Gill, S. Nazar Singh Gill, S. Babby Bath, S. Kabul Singh Bhullar, S. Baljit Singh Mangi, S. Chaman Lal, S. Surinder Bhatti, S. Parminder Walia, S. Jindi Khangura and S. Amardev Badesha worked relentlessly to make the event success.
