CNN Hero Narayanan Krishnan’s “Akshaya Fund raiser in Chicago” was an outstanding Success

Chicago IL: CNN Hero 2010, Narayanan Krishnan attended a Fund- raising program on 4:00PM, Sunday, April 1, 2012 at The Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago 10915 Lemont Rd Lemont, IL and it was a grand success. There were more than 700 attendees for this fund-raiser, which involved fantastic Cultural programs, Light music and Fashion show.

The Chicagoans were very generous and they donated over $40,000. Mr. Krishnan’s inspiring speech moved everyone and everyone was generous and made this program a grand success. Mr. Krishnan was overwhelmed with the support, donation and he was in tears when he finished his presentation. He said that he did not expect such a huge support. Mr. Krishnan informed the audience about the project that he is currently doing- Building 24,000 Sq.foot rehabilitation center for destitute and homeless people. He came to U.S.A with a goal of $90,000 to finish the project. Chicago donated $40,000 for this cause and he was surprised with the love and donation shown by the chicagoans. The volunteers have done a wonderful job in putting this event together for Akshaya. Ironically, when he came to Chicago last year, the total attendees were in 20’s. Therefore, he came to Chicago with less expectation and it turned out to be a great success.

Akshaya’s Mission:
Committed to the Care of the helpless, forsaken, mentally ill, old, sick, and destitute living and dying on the streets of India by providing nourishing food, love & the chance to live with dignity. From about 30 beneficiaries in June 2002, feeding has grown to over 450 per day in 2011. Over 1.9 million meals have been served till December 2011. Basic needs such as bath, shave, hair cut, clothes etc are provided to very frail and old people. When required the sick are given medical care. Akshaya gives compassion, dignity and love to its beneficiaries. Akshaya has two focused programs- feeding the helpless and construction of Akshaya home. After a decade of feeding the hungry and helping the destitute, Akshaya has a new initiative — its largest to date. The Akshaya Home will be a shelter for the homeless, a haven for the sick and a place to provide additional continuous care for those in need.

To combat roadside hunger for the helpless, Krishnan and the Akshaya Trust volunteers have prepared and delivered three meals a day every day of the year for ten years — that’s over 1,900,000 meals. Akshaya is now feeding approximately 450 deserving people a day. Once the Akshaya Home is completed and functioning the task of feeding those in need will substantially change. Food preparation will be more efficient and the drain on resources to distribute the food will be substantially reduced. Visit their website at www.akshayatrust.org or www.akshayausa.org
