Chicago IL: In the heart of Chicagoland, where the winds whisper tales of diverse diasporas, the
Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) Chicago orchestrated a masterpiece of cultural fusion
on August 8, 2025. Marking India’s 79th Independence Day, the event at The Matrix Club in
Naperville wasn’t just a celebration it was a living canvas where strokes of patriotic fervor
blended seamlessly with the rhythmic hues of Bollywood. Under the visionary guidance of
Founder and Chairman Sunil Shah and President Anu Malhotra, this gathering transformed a
suburban venue into a pulsating tribute to freedom, unity, and timeless melodies. Drawing over
600 attendees, including dignitaries like Consulate General Somnath Ghosh and Congressman
Raja Krishnamoorthi, the night unfolded like a Bollywood blockbuster: emotional highs, dance
sequences, award twists, and a musical climax that left the audience chanting for encores.
The evening kicked off at 6:00 PM with a cocktail hour, setting a convivial tone amid the elegant
ambiance of The Matrix Club. By 7:00 PM, the “Tribute to Motherland” segment ignited the
patriotic spark. Co-emcees Anu Malhotra and Prachi Jaitley welcomed the crowd with
eloquence, invoking the spirit of India’s freedom fighters. The air thickened with emotion as Dr.
Radhika Chimata led the national anthems—first the Star-Spangled Banner, honoring the
adopted homeland, followed by Jana Gana Mana, evoking the soul of Bharat. Attendees stood in
unison, hands over hearts, bridging two nations in a moment of profound respect.
Sunil Shah FIA founder and Chairman, the evening’s architect, took the stage early, his words
resonating like a clarion call: “When music and patriotism meet, magic happens. Tonight, entire
Chicagoland will witness that magic.” His message underscored FIA’s 16-year legacy of
fostering community through events like Diwali festivals, medical camps, and scholarship
programs. Shah’s vision has grown FIA into a beacon for over 300 active members,
championing cultural pride and civic engagement in the Midwest. Past presidents Vinita
Gulabani, Hitesh Gandhi, and Dr. Kamal Patel shared anecdotes of the organization’s
exponential growth, painting a picture of resilience and collective effort.
Dignitaries added layers of gravitas. Consulate General Somnath Ghosh praised the diaspora’s
dual commitment: “This celebration showcases the strength of our diaspora and its deep
commitment to both India and America.” Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, eyeing a Senate
run, delivered a succinct yet powerful address, adhering to his “three rules of public speaking:
Be sure, be sweet, be gone.” He emphasized protecting the US-India relationship, earning
cheers for statements like, “India should be treated better than the Chinese Communist Party.”
Local leaders, including Naperville Mayor Scott Wehrli, Schaumburg Mayor Tom Dailly, and
Aurora Alderwoman Shweta Baid, lauded FIA’s role in enriching community life. Wehrli’s poetic
reflection—”From the streets of Naperville to the dreams of Mumbai, we lift each other
higher”—captured the event’s innovative blend of local and global identities.
The cultural performances were the heartbeat of the night, innovatively fusing tradition with
modernity. Shekhar Dance Academy’s patriotic routine exploded with energy, featuring young
dancers in vibrant costumes interpreting freedom through synchronized moves. The crowd
erupted in applause, their cheers echoing the choreography’s creativity. Then came Elizar and
her team from Shelzar Dance Academy, delivering a mesmerizing tribute to India’s warriors.
Dressed in symbolic attire, they evoked the sacrifices of freedom fighters with fluid grace and
powerful gestures, set to anthems like “Vande Mataram.” These acts weren’t mere
entertainment; they were narrative innovations, using dance as a medium to retell history in a
way that resonated with younger generations, blending classical Bharatanatyam with
contemporary hip-hop elements.
Awards formed the emotional core, recognizing pillars of the community in a ceremony that felt
like a family reunion. Sunil Shah surprised the audience by presenting the ‘Pillar of Unity and
Vision Award’ to himself—wait, no: in a heartfelt twist, President Anu Malhotra, alongside
Krishnamoorthi and Wehrli, bestowed it upon Shah for his unwavering leadership. The standing
ovation was thunderous. Honorees included JP Khaira (Grand Sponsor), Dr. Umang Patel for his
philanthropy during COVID, Ajeet Singh of the Indian American Business Council, Rita Shah
and Aashima Washington for their community service, Anil Loomba of Home Made Mortgage
Solutions, Chintan Patel of India Co., Dr. Bharat Barai, Manish and Shailja Gandhi, Pinky Dinesh
Thakkar, Mukesh Vasani of Entron Corporation, Ch. Sahab Singh, Anu and Bharat Malhotra, Dr.
Bhupinder Beri, Dr. Asha Oroskar and Dr. Anil Oroskar, Brij Sharma of Power Volt, Naresh Shah
of ReliaCare, , and Sona Shah. Each award was presented with personal anecdotes, highlighting
innovative contributions—from job creation to cultural preservation. Sponsors like Manish &
Shailja Gandhi, BindiCo, and others were thanked profusely, their support framed as the “fuel
for our vision.”
Vice Chairman Neil Khot, a congressional candidate, shared an inspiring message on
patriotism, drawing from his immigrant journey: “I want to fight for all of you to keep the
American Dream alive.” His words innovatively tied personal stories to broader themes, urging
support for organizations like FIA that nurture leaders.
The Bollywood Music Extravaganza featuring legendary composer Jatin Pandit and his son
Raahul Jatin, backed by singers Khushi, Nauzad, and Avni Singh. Pandit, the maestro behind
90s hits, transported the audience to nostalgia’s embrace with classics like “Pehla Nasha,”
“Jadu Teri Nazar,” “Ho Gaya Hai Tujhko To Pyar Sajna,” and “Ladki Badi Anjani Hai.” The dance
floor ignited—couples swayed, families sang along, and even dignitaries tapped their feet.
Cheers of “Once more!” extended the set, as Shah quipped from the stage: “This is the magic of
music; it keeps us together long after the clock says it’s time to go.” The performance was
innovative in its intergenerational appeal, with Raahul blending modern twists into timeless
tunes, ensuring the melodies bridged elders’ memories and youths’ vibes.
As the night wound down, Secretary General Nilabh Dubey, Joint Secretaries Falguni Sukhadia
and Kamlesh Kapoor delivered a humorous vote of thanks: “Special thanks to Jatin
Pandit—we’re now considering making him the official FIA sleep-deprivation ambassador!”
Laughter rippled through the hall. Anu Malhotra closed with, “It was the grandest Independence
Day celebration Chicagoland has ever seen,” while Shah summed it up: “This was more than an
event; it was a statement of who we are.”
Mr. Hemant Patel, a respected leader from Old FIA, brought warmth and unity to the event,
highlighting the strong bond within the Indian American community. His presence, along with
other community leaders, showed the power of togetherness as different FIA chapters united to
celebrate their shared heritage. Hemant Patel’s friendly interactions and support reflected the
community’s spirit of collaboration, creating a sense of unity that goes beyond individual
groups. This gathering was a historic moment, with both FIA presidents sharing the stage,
symbolizing a united community. Everyone hopes that both FIA groups from the same
community will meet more often, combining their strengths to create an impact far greater than
the sum of their parts, like making 1 + 1 equal 11.
In reflecting on this extraordinary evening hosted by FIA Chicago, one cannot help but marvel at
the innovative tapestry woven from threads of heritage, harmony, and hope. As Chairman and
Founder of Asian Media USA, I have chronicled countless diaspora events, but this celebration
stands as a beacon of what our communities can achieve when united. Sunil Shah and Anu
Malhotra’s leadership exemplifies visionary innovation, blending patriotism with entertainment
to foster intergenerational bonds and civic pride. Events like these are not mere festivities; they
are vital bridges between our roots in India and our growth in America, reminding us that
freedom’s flame burns brightest in collective endeavors. To the honorees, performers, and
attendees: your contributions propel us forward. Let us continue innovating, celebrating, and
serving—ensuring the melodies of liberty echo eternally.
