Colorful Holi at The Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago

Lemont IL: Love and enthusiasm to welcome spring and with warm temperature above normal in Chicago land brought over 3,500 people to celebrate Holi on Saturday March 10th, 2012 at Sri Rama Temple of Lemont IL. Holi also known as Dhuli Vandana in Sanskrit, is familiar to many as Dhuleti, Dhulandi, a rich Hindu culture celebrated at the end of winter season on the last full moon day of the lunar month Phalguna. Holi infuses vibrancy and enthusiasm, bringing excitement at palpable extremes to each one and every person celebrating the Mela. The broad smile, garish clothes and enthusiasm said it all. Holi celebrations at Rama temple brought out the best out from children and adults, families and friends, people known to each other and otherwise; applying the vibrant colors and wishing each other love, happiness and harmony.

Holi celebrations were started early with a cultural program organized by Smt. Rupa Acharya (Cultural Chairperson, HTGC) and DJ Nilesh Patel. Children and young adults performed dances in groups for famous songs like Thug le and senorita medley, Holi Ayye Re, Crazy kiya re, Bindiya chamke gi, Natkut (Navarang) and many more that bring everlasting memories to one and all. All in attendance, devotees and local community enthusiasts alike, joined together at the dance floor.

Holika Dahan (burning of Holika) Bonfire was ready on premises with the help of temple shilipis Vanamoorthy and Velayudham. Holi color sales by the Youth group and Snack Stall by Prasadam chair Veena Marwaha was the highlight around the bonfire area. Children were selective in picking the colors green, pink, yellow, blue, orange and purple. Colors were applied to each other expressing love and respect to each other with big hugs.

Pyarke rang se bharo pichkari,
Sneh ke rang do duniya sari,
Ye rang na jane koi jaat na koi boli,
Aapko Mubarak ho aapno ki holi

The community joined to light the bonfire with pundit Ram Prasad ji, go dancing around it to the music into the late evening. The slight chill setting in the evening of air was insignificant with hot drinks and snacks to accompany the bonfire and dancing late in the evening. It was truly a celebration memorable to one and all until next year Holi.
